The Edge Of Today aims to identify a sample of the Australian jazz scene by mapping out the differing styles of jazz featuring five of Australia's leading guitarists. With mainly original tracks this CD demonstrates the artistic, social and cultural diversity of each player.
Featuring Rob Burke -sax, bass clarinet, flute, Doug de Vries, Slava Grigoryan, Stephen Magnusson, Geoff Hughes, Peter Petrucci -guitars, Tony Floyd -drums, Nick Haywood -bass.
“In 2004 I asked five guitarists to be part of this recording project. They were picked because of their different musical backgrounds, influences, musical directions and the high quality of their performance.” Robert Burke
“It is a rare treat to be brought together with fellow guitarists for whom I have not only respect and admiration, but also a sense of amazement at how we can all play the same instrument and have such diverse approaches.” Doug de Vries
“Improvisation is a vital part of musical life, only it comes from a primitive, spontaneous urge that I have never had the pleasure of studying. It's wonderful to be around people that really know what they are doing!” Slava Grigoryan
“I have always found it intriguing to multilayer guitar parts to achieve a sonic resonance, that is not possible with one instrument.” Stephen Magnusson
“For me great improvising has a searching, yearning quality that can manifest itself in any number of elements at any time.” Geoff Hughes
“Within all elements of jazz the spirit and tradition is important as well as keeping your ears and mind open, to me this is what spontaneous music making is all about.” Peter Petrucci
The popular/art culture of each country is shaped by that country’s particular circumstances. In Australia, key elements affecting the jazz scene are, its distance from the main centres of jazz influence and its small population. Both these elements affect how musicians learn their craft. The Edge Of Today is a documentation of jazz/improvised music by Australian musicians in 2005.
"This is a quiet recording. Its restrained warmth suits me well. I have the flu. The subtitle "A Mapping of the Melbourne Sound" can be ignored. Burke, a melodic tenor and soprano saxophonist, has devised settings for himself and Melbourne guitarists Slava Grigoryan, Doug de Vries, Geoff Hughes, Peter Petrucci and Steve Magnusson. On track two all are gathered. The guitar ensemble - with lines interwoven from Burke's tenor, bass clarinet and flute - is perhaps more homogenised than you'd expect, given the weird sounds you can get from a guitar, but it's subtle and intriguing. Grigoryan's panging, sharp tones, with flamenco influences, make a nice contrast with the often rounded, neon colours of his electrified colleagues. Tango, choro and samba rhythms abound, with a track from Astor Piazzola. De Vries has a special warmth in the Latin jazz area. Magnusson's brief solos are just wizard, and he contributes a great tune. The titles of tracks three and four should be transposed for Burke's notes to make sense. "
