This remarkable trio first came together for the Melbourne Women’s Jazz Festival in 2003. The early promise of that initial encounter soon grew into an enduring musical partnership, allowing the three players – pianist Andrea Keller, bassist Tamara Murphy and drummer Allan Browne – to develop a deeply personal ensemble sound. All three musicians are highly-regarded bandleaders in their own right. The Keller/Murphy/Browne Trio, however, has no leader; it is a genuinely collaborative enterprise. Carried by the Sun – the trio’s luminous debut CD – features compositions by all three bandmembers. Each piece unfolds like a three-way conversation, the focus shifting subtly from player to player without the need for bombast or empty technical displays. Instead, the emphasis in on the warmth of the players’ rapport and the spontaneity of their dialogues – whether they are conversing in hushed whispers (as on the hymn-like Lullaby), teasing one another in playful asides (Saint Meesha) or darting from one sparkling topic to another (Carried By the Sun).
Drummer Allan Browne has been leading bands since 1960, and was a member of the Paul Grabowsky Trio for 20 years. Andrea Keller has won multiple awards for her unique quintet and Bartok projects, while Tamara Murphy leads her own quintet and is a valued member of many fine Melbourne jazz ensembles.
